What shoes are best for strength training?

Choosing the right footwear can make a huge difference to your training and reduce the risk of injury. At Square One, when you buy new trainers, that’s when we praise you for committing even further!

If you’re lifting, whether it’s squats, deadlifts or lunges, flat soles are going to be your best friend.

Running shoes are built to absorb impact, which is great for pounding the pavement but not so helpful when you’re trying to stay stable.

Squishy soles can leave you feeling wobbly during strength exercises.

Instead, look for training shoes with a flat, sturdy sole. Good examples are Nike Metcons, Reebok Nanos or Rad Ones. They give your feet a solid base, help keep your ankles steady and can last for years if you save them just for the gym.

If you’re ever unsure, you can simply remove your trainers during certain movements such as squats.
