Why *weight lifted* isn’t everything

Sure, many people think lifting heavy looks cool, and our coach James clearly didn’t get those quads from yoga.. But the amount of weight you lift isn’t the only way to measure progress, and it’s definitely not something you need to chase every single session.

At Square One, we love watching our members become stronger and hit personal bests. It’s a brilliant feeling. But training isn’t just about going as heavy as possible every time you walk through the door. Your body needs variety, time under tension, and proper recovery so you can keep making progress safely and stay injury-free. 🤕

Some days, you’ll feel fresh and strong. Other days, you might feel tired, stiff, or just a bit flat. That’s normal. Lighter sessions aren’t a sign of being lazy. They’re part of training smart.

On lighter days, you can still get loads of benefits by focusing on things like:

  • Slowing down your reps for better control

  • Practising ‘perfect’ technique

  • Working on range of motion

  • Getting more reps with lighter weights

These sessions still challenge your body and help you build long-term strength over time and a positive attitude towards exercise.

Think of lifting like a pension pot. You’re adding little by little, rather than spending it all at once. You’re building strength, resilience, and confidence FOREVER, not just for a single heavy lift.

If you’re ever unsure how to adjust your weights or how hard you should push, try to ask someone to give you a hand. At Square One, we’re always happy to help you train smart, not just hard.
