Ski Struggles to Reversing Osteoporosis

When Cathy first came to Square One, she wasn’t chasing personal bests or trying to lift heavy. She just wanted to go skiing with her family, but struggled to get insured because of a diagnosis she’d recently received: osteoporosis.

For many women, hearing the word “osteoporosis” can feel like a full stop. But for Cathy, it became the starting point.

“I didn’t think strength training was for someone like me.”

Cathy, like many women, didn’t grow up with weights as a normal part of life. The gym felt intimidating. Weight training sounded intense.

But she kept showing up. Just twice a week for coached strength sessions at Square One, alongside a few cardio-focused classes to support her overall fitness. Simple. Sustainable. And slowly, her confidence and her strength began to build.

ImPROVED BONE DENSITY

After months of consistent training, Cathy returned for a follow-up DEXA scan, and the results were undeniable. Her bone density had improved so significantly that she was no longer classified as osteoporotic. She had moved into normal ranges, something doctors don’t always expect.

All without medication. No extreme dieting. No complex plans. Just progressive, well-coached strength training with the right balance of movement and recovery.

“It’s the kind of thing that makes you realise how powerful your body still is, if you just give it the right challenge.” - Cathy

Why We’re Sharing Cathy’s Story

At Square One, we work with many women like Cathy. Women who were told to “be careful” or “slow down,” when really, their bodies needed the exact opposite. They needed to be challenged, safely and confidently, with training that actually supports bone density, independence, and long-term health.

We believe strength training is one of the most powerful tools available to women as they age. It’s time we break the stigma that it's only for the young, the fit, or the fearless.
